Fiber Orientation in Plastic Part Designs – Autodesk Moldflow 2012

In order to reduce weight and improve fuel economy, automotive manufacturers are increasingly replacing metal parts with plastic parts that are reinforced with long glass fibers. The orientation of the glass fibers is critical to the overall performance, shape, and dimensions of the plastic parts. Thus, simulation is an invaluable tool in allowing designers to optimize their designs to maximize the benefits of using long glass fibers. Autodesk developed the industry’s first capability to predict the orientation of long fibers in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the US Department of Energy on the prestigious FreedomCAR program. Autodesk® Moldflow® 2012 software helps to more accurately predict the orientation of short and long glass fibers, which are critical to the overall performance, shape, strength, and weight of plastic parts. Radium Technology Preview – Long Fiber Orientation Workflow

Autodesk® Moldflow® Insight Radium Technology Preview software ( download at www.autodesk.com ) calculates the orientation of long fibers in plastic materials. Customers are now able to accurately predict how plastic materials reinforced with long glass fibers will behave during the injection molding process as well as the effect of the fiber orientation on the product’s mechanical behavior and warpage.
