(1) I don’t know if this is one of your options, but I believe that “units produced” should be the answer for (E) Quality control and possibly (A).
(2) (3) Sorry, I can’t be any help with these two.
(4) I believe this question wasn’t clear (I’ve found it happens a lot). I think it was supposed to have read “Activity-based costing is most appropriate to use when DIRECT labor costs are a ?. In which case, the answer would be (A).
(5) I’m not sure about (A), but both B and C are true. This would mean that (D) is correct.
(6) A, B, and C, are all false, so (D) is correct

Good luck

Probability. Please help!?

Question by Max: Probability. Please help!?
An injection molding process leaves an average of 1.3 defects per bumper. Let Y and Z be the next two bumpers produced. Use an appropriate prob. function to evaluate:
a.)P[Y=2]
b.)P[Y>=1]
c.)sqr(Var Y)
d.)P[Y+Z>=2]

The problem does NOT say that it follows a normal distribution. This is quite literally all it gives. I’m assuming that this problem has something to do with the probability of 2 independent factors–I’ve looked at the section they are from but can’t find a thing. There are solutions if you have a standard deviation, but there wasn’t one given so I don’t know how to go about these. I have a normal distribution approx. table but I’m not sure if I can use it, or even how in this situation.

Best answer:

Answer by M3
the poisson distribution will be appropriate here. the formula is

P[x] = e^-m * m^x / x!

qa
m = 1.3, x = 2
P[2] = e^-1.3 * 1.3^2 /2!
= .2303
————

qb
P[>=1] = 1 – P[0] = 1 – e^-1.3 * 1.3^0 /0!
= .7275
———–

qc
variance of a posson distribution = m
sqrt(variance Y) = sqrt(1.3)
= 1,14
———

qd
for [Y+Z] , m = 2.6
applying the formula,
P[>=2] = 1 – { P[0] + P[1] }
= 1 – { e^-2.6 + e^-2.6*2.6/1! }
= .7326

a.)P[Y=2]
b.)P[Y>=1]
c.)sqr(Var Y)
d.)P[Y+Z>=2]

Best answer:

Answer by efqy
You’re presumably meant to assume a Poisson distribution with parameter 1.3

[The definition of Y and Z are wrong, and if your teacher/lecturer/textbook actually put that (“Let Y and Z be the next two bumpers produced”) they should be ashamed .

Y and Z should be “the number of defects on the next two bumpers produced, respectively”. If Y and Z were the bumpers themselves, they would not take values like 2, because bumpers are not numbers.]

a) just substitute 2 into the Poisson probability function with parameter 1.3

b) This is 1-P(Y=0)

c) what’s the variance of a Poisson random variable?

d) What’s the distribution of the sum of two independent Poissons?

I need help Designing a Hydraulic Scenario for school?

Question by Robert Obrien: I need help Designing a Hydraulic Scenario for school?
Having trouble with this piece in class…
Scenario
I work for a company that builds plastic injection molding machines. my job is to design a hydraulic circuit that will perform the folowing operations:
Open and close a mold with a hydraulic cylinder. (i understand this one)
Powedr a hydraulic motor to trun a large screw that feeds hot plastic into the mold. (i also understand this.)

(what i dont understand)
The motor and the cylinder should be capable of operating separetely, BUT THE MOTOR SHOULD ONLY BE ABLE TO TURN WHEN THE MOLD IS CLAMPED.

how can i do that?

Best answer:

Answer by Wingman
Without seeing the injection molding machine, all I can suggest is to add some kind of limit/ micro switch to the mold hydraulic cylinder or the moving part of the mold door.

This limit/ micro switch can then be wired in series with the Start push button for the hydraulic motor.

Wire it up as a normally closed circuit when the door is clamped.

Need help targeting the most rapidly growing US manufacturing sectors?

Question by Mary K: Need help targeting the most rapidly growing US manufacturing sectors?
I am trying to figure out what kind of finished goods manufacturing is still done in the US? Are there any areas that are actually increasing their business?

My reason for the questions is that I work for a small injection molder (plastics) and we just lost a big customer to a mexican molder. Cheap labor, nafta, no environmental regs, etc….

Most of our customers are either hurting (like automotive industry) or appliance makers, which are also slowing down.

We offer some secondary services such as assembly, painting, printing, etc.

Just looking for help to try to find areas to target to here in the US since it seems like lots of our business is moving out of the country. Any suggestions?

Trying to keep this positive, any suggestions of areas to target or groups to join or places to look?

I know there are a lot of smart ppl that answer here on yahoo, hoping someone can give me a spark.
To answer the question about what we do…
We have from 20 to 440 T machines, so mainly smaller precision parts.

Some things we mold are:

**appliance knobs, buttons handles, bezels (painted hi- low or numbers)
**plastic water and polution filters
**electronics cases, buttons,
**automotive cases, covers, knobs, buttons, light tubes, reflectors, )
mostly under hood, part of guages in dash or inside the door frame parts)
** medical cases (we are not clean room or white room though, so not too much medical)
Consumer goods- mop assemblies, small buckets, scrapers, etx.
We do some pretty complicated precise parts and do them well. Not optics, but fairly difficult.

As someone who has ordered from China I feel your pain. We are in this really awkward point in between it being cheaper to order from China and it being cheaper to order within the US. It stinks. Machinery happens to be the one thing that is really hard to find within the US. You would be better off dealing with China for one last time.
Best of Luck!

Quick Tips To Help With Your Plastic Machining

Quick Tips To Help With Your Plastic Machining

To find any machine shop is very easy. The difficult part is finding the shop that specializes in plastic machining, particularly plastic precision machining and other non-metallic parts and plastic machine parts.

Aerospace, fluid handling, medical and semiconductor are just few of the many industries that have constant demand for tasks that involve plastic materials and processes. Shops may be flooding the streets of America, however, finding the right shop that provides excellence service to customers on top of offering the highest quality of plastic precision machining service and plastic-precisioned products and parts. Building trust is essential. Sometimes it is easy, however at most, people place trust to wrong shops. To help you on this, there are several tips that serve as your guide, in case need for plastic machining arises.

Before purchasing plastic materials and machines such as plastic rod, plastic molds, plastic welding, plastic sheet, plastic injection molders, plastic fabrication and other plastic precision machining parts, you need to understand the capacity, condition and capability of the plastic machine or plastic machine parts. A conversation with the store manager or sales agent can be helpful.

Second, make sure that the plastic machine shop can give you important documents such as maintenance records, manuals and the complete manufacturer’s specifications and equipment retrofit quotes. These papers are great source of information that is useful in your decision making with regards plastic machining. Third, use the expertise of third party to verify the condition of the plastic machine parts. Their opinion or appraisal on the condition, quality and capability of the plastic precision machining parts and plastic materials are decisive. Today, there are several advantages of using plastic materials over metal parts.

Plastic materials have properties and characteristics that contribute to the high quality of the finished products at reasonable costs. These properties include lightweight, high-impact resistance, corrosion resistance, easy processing, high-wear resistance and less roughness. Experts suggest that beside great savings, plastic materials increase productivity, improved appearance and long duration without the lubrication requirements. Polyethylene machining parts are also preferred due to their being recyclable and environment-friendly.

When it comes to aeronautics and aerospace technology, plastic machining is preferred over materials because the former can withstand heat. Nowadays, plastic materials and plastic machine parts are used in solid fuel booster and ablative shields to allow re-entry of space shuttles.

In manufacturing helicopters, plastic materials and plastic precision machining play a key role for its durability, flexibility and capacity to absorb vibrations. Its being strong means the weight of the aircraft can be reduced without compromising quality and safety.

During World War II, plastic was first introduced as a substitute for rubber machining and items such as fuel-tank linings, flier’s boots and so forth. Today, plastic industry continues to evolve with technology. If your needs fall under the category of pipe systems, plastic machining is very helpful in few ways. First, it is cost-efficient as far as installation and equipment are concerned. Second, plastic precision machining and plastic materials require less maintenance. Third, they last longer than the metal counterparts.

Plastic machining including all plastic materials and plastic parts does not decompose. In fact, this property is advantageous because it allow engineers and manufacturers to recycle the plastic parts and materials. Its source is oil. However, scientists today are doing their best efforts to produce plastic from vegetable oil.
